1,500 USTA Players Excited for Mixed Championships

September 4, 2014 02:16 PM

Nearly 1,500 tennis players from all over South Carolina will come to Florence next weekend for the USTA South Carolina Mixed Doubles State League Championships.

The players will enjoy coed doubles tennis and get to experience the City of Florence’s many restaurants and hotels.

“We’re just looking forward to having all the people in Florence, showing them what Florence has to offer,” said Ed Sprenger, local league coordinator of the Florence Tennis Association. “(The mixed championship) just fits really, really well for our community.”

This is the third consecutive year a USTA mixed state league championship has been in Florence.

Players from Aiken, Rock Hill, the Midlands, the coast and the Upstate will play in the championships. In past years, Sprenger said, players have sometimes wondered why the championships are in Florence rather than elsewhere in South Carolina.

Then they come to Florence and experience the city’s restaurants and hotels. “They’re like, ‘Wow, we see why the USTA picks Florence,’” he said.

Hotel managers are especially glad to have the tennis event in town this month, Sprenger said. Area hotel officials are seeing more empty rooms now that summer vacations have ended.

“It’s the perfect time of the year to have that event in Florence,” Sprenger said.

The championships, which will be held Sept. 12-15, will feature participants ranging in ages 18 to 65 and older. The championships also will showcase a variety of competition levels, including beginning players and longtime pros.

The tennis will be played at four Florence sites: Timrod Park; West Florence High School; the Florence Country Club; and the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center, the championships’ official host site.

State championship teams can advance to the 2014 USTA Southern Mixed Doubles Sectional Championships, scheduled for Oct. 10-12 in Mobile, Alabama.
