COLUMBIA, S.C. – Different weekend, similar influx of tennis players.

For the second consecutive weekend, the state office of the U.S. Tennis Association and the City of Aiken will partner together to host a USTA South Carolina League State Championship.

Last weekend, about 1,000 players from across the state in the 40 & Over division competed in Aiken. This weekend, about 550 players will compete in the USTA South Carolina 18 & Over 4.0-5.0 League State Championships.

The National Tennis Rating Program rates players on a 1 to 7 scale, with “7” ratings reserved for world-class players who compete in international tournaments.)

The three-day event will feature 48 teams from all over South Carolina, including Greenville, Hilton Head Island and Columbia. The event also will feature some players from much farther away. Mike Mayeda is coming from California to play in the championship, which will be his first experience at a USTA state league championship.

Mayeda played the regular USTA league season with his Lexington team. But he and his wife recently moved to Los Angeles.

“I’m just looking forward to seeing what (state championships) are like,” Mayeda said. “I think it will be pretty cool.”

The teams will compete for pride and chances to advance to the USTA Southern championships in July in Mobile, Alabama.

Play starts Saturday morning. Odell Weeks Tennis Center is the official host site of the championship. The following facilities also will host matches: The Reserve Club at Woodside Plantation, USC Aiken and Fermata Club.
