18 and Over Championships Finish Strong

June 2, 2014 08:12 PM

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Ten teams from across the state finished the USTA South Carolina 18 and Over State League Championships, Levels 2.5 – 3.5, on a positive note Monday.

The teams either won their state league championships or finished as finalists in their respective divisions during the USTA SC championships, which were held at five Greenville sites and lasted three days.

From Greenville, the “Kroc All Stars” finished second in the 3.5 men’s division.

(The National Tennis Rating Program rates players from 1 to 7, with beginners starting at 1.)

The five champion teams now can advance to sectional competitions and vie for chances to play at the USTA National Championships.

The 2.5 and 3.5 champions can play at the USTA League 18 and Over Southern Sectional Championships from July 25-27 in Lexington, South Carolina. The state champions in the 3.0 level can advance to their sectional championships in Auburn, Alabama, during the same weekend.

About 800 players on 72 teams competed during the championships. The players also shopped and dined throughout Greenville and stayed in area hotels, stimulating the local economy.

Bringing the USTA SC state league championships to Greenville was a citywide effort. Furman University, Thornblade Club, Kroc Center Greenville, the Pavilion Recreation Complex and the Greenville Country Club all hosted matches. The Greenville Country Club was the championships’ official host site and hosted all of Monday’s finals matches.

All of the teams made it to the USTA SC 18 and Over State League Championships by advancing through their local leagues. The Upper Piedmont Tennis Association is the local league for the Greenville area.
