55 and Over, 75 and Over USTA SC State League Championships

May 5, 2014 05:32 PM

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Playing close to home always helps, even in adult recreational tennis.

Beaufort County teams won six of the 11 USTA South Carolina State League Championships that were won on and around Hilton Head Island on Thursday through Monday.

Area teams won all three of the Adult 75 and Over State League Championships, which started Thursday and concluded Saturday. (Check out scores from both championships here.)

In the Adult 55 and Over State League Championships, Beaufort County teams won three of the eight titles. Those championships finished Monday afternoon under cloudless skies.

The eight champion Adult 55 and Over teams can advance to the 2014 USTA Southern 55 and Over Sectional Championships on Sept. 19-21 in Asheville, North Carolina. There, the South Carolina teams will compete with teams from all over the South.

The Adult 75 and Over teams finish play at state. South Carolina is the only state in the nine-state USTA Southern Section that offers formal league play and state championships for its 75 and older players.

About 1,000 players on 106 teams competed during the two USTA SC State League Championships. The players from all over South Carolina also helped the Beaufort County economy. When they weren’t playing tennis, they were eating at area restaurants, staying at local hotels and resorts and shopping at area businesses.

Palmetto Dunes was the official host site of the two championships, but five other sites, including Palmetto Dunes Centre Court, also hosted matches.

Eight more USTA SC State League Championships will take place all over the state through November, including three more on Hilton Head Island.

The USTA SC Combo Doubles State League Championships will take place Oct. 16-20. The combo championships, the largest USTA SC State League Championships, is expected to bring about 2,500 participants to Hilton Head Island during a slower time for the area’s tourism.

The 65 and Over and 70 and Over State League Championships are scheduled for Nov. 5-10 on Hilton Head Island as well.
