Aiken Captain Looks Forward to Playing at Home

Not every team has the opportunity to play in a USTA SC State League Championship close to home. Yet this weekend, Cathy Sirmans and her 3.5 level team will have that opportunity during the USTA SC Adult 40 and Over State League Championships in Aiken.

Sirmans and her team will be playing on their home courts while some teams will travel more than two hours to compete. “I’m super excited to be able to stay around home,” Sirmans said. “My family will be there to cheer me on and support me.”

Sirmans and her team went undefeated this season in their local Aiken league for the first time since they began playing together five years ago.

The team works well together, she said.

“The ladies’ ability is what got us to where we are,” said Sirmans, who captains the team.

This will be the team’s second time playing in Aiken for a USTA SC State League Championship. Sirmans is looking forward to playing against a new group of players and people her team does not get to play with often.

She finds playing new people challenging and enjoyable.

Being a captain requires extensive dedication and effort, yet Sirmans enjoys the organization that comes with the job. She makes sure each member gets equal playing time and enjoys the tournaments.

Sirmans also is an avid tennis player who enjoys the strategy and competition of tennis.

“I wish I started the sport years ago,” she said.

She began playing tennis five years ago, and now plays on 10 to 15 teams annually.

With a team she loves, her family cheering her on, and the ability to sleep in her own bed, it’s no wonder she’s excited for the USTA SC 40 and Over State League Championship in Aiken.
