Aiken Mixed Doubles Tourney Hosts Record Participants

October 12, 2013 07:09 PM
Aiken mixed doubles continues Sunday.

AIKEN, S.C. – The biggest field ever for two USTA South Carolina Mixed Doubles championships enjoyed great tennis and beautiful weather during day one of the tournaments here.

More than 450 players participated in the 55 and Over and 65 and Over Mixed Doubles Championships held at three Aiken venues Saturday. The tournament has almost doubled from 2009, when 22 teams participated.

Harry Rapelje and Wanda McKenzie of the Keowee Key team were among the players at the Odell Weeks Tennis Center. The duo won their early afternoon match in the Mixed Doubles 65 and Over 7.0 division.

Rapelje, 73, started playing tennis more after he retired to stay active.

Dozens more spectators also attended the USTA South Carolina sanctioned tournament.

With the sun shining in the cloudless sky, Mark Calvert, tennis supervisor for the City of Aiken, said he heard only one complaint from players and participants: People watching college football in the clubhouse said the 19-inch television could have been bigger.

“That’s usually a pretty good day,” Calvert said.

Players are competing in the 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 divisions in the 55 and Over championships. The 65 and Over championships have two divisions, 7.0 and 8.0.

Champions from each 55 and Over division will be invited to the USTA Southern Invitational 55 and Over Mixed Doubles Championships, Oct. 25-27 in Little Rock, Ark., and North Little Rock, Ark.

Leagues were established to provide adult recreational tennis players with the opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels. Players participate on teams in a league format, which is administered by USTA South Carolina. USTA League is open to any USTA member 18 years of age or older.

USTA Leagues are the largest recreational tennis program in the world.  Players compete on teams divided by age and skill level, with new age divisions for players aged 40 and over and players aged 55 and over debuting earlier this year.
