Greenville Readies for USTA SC, Economic Boost

May 29, 2014 10:34 AM

The City of Greenville will receive an economic boost this weekend when more than 850 tennis players head there for a USTA South Carolina state league championship.

The USTA SC 18 and Over State League Championships for levels 2.5-3.5 will run Saturday through Monday in Greenville.

When the players aren’t competing, they’ll be shopping and dining throughout the city and staying in area hotels.W40_18_finalists

A team from the Pee Dee Tennis League celebrates its finalist finish last weekend in Aiken.

USTA organizers expect 72 teams for the championships, which will be hosted by five facilities, including Furman University, Thornblade Club, Kroc Center Greenville, the Pavilion Recreation Complex and the Greenville Country Club.

The country club is the championships’ official site and will host all finals matches.

The players will compete for five state league championships in all.

The state champions earn bragging rights for a year, and, more importantly, the chance to keep playing in USTA championships.

The winning teams in the 2.5 and 3.5 competition levels can advance to the USTA League 18 and Over Southern Sectional Championships from July 25-27 in Lexington, S.C.

The state champions in the 3.0 competition level can advance to their sectional championships in Auburn, Alabama, during the same weekend.

(The National Tennis Rating Program rates players from 1 to 7, with "7" ratings reserved for players with international tournament experience.)

USTA SC 18 and Over State League Championships, levels 4.0 – 5.0, were held last weekend in Aiken.

Players advance to state league championships by playing in their local leagues. To find a USTA league team to play on this summer, go here.
