Home Team Among Eight 40 and Over Champs

May 19, 2014 01:35 PM

AIKEN, S.C. – Maurice Pieters usually likes traveling to play in USTA South Carolina State League Championships.

But, given how Pieters’ Aiken team performed here this weekend, he might soon be favoring more home state league championships.

Pieters and his Aiken Area Tennis League team won the USTA SC Adult 40 and Over State League Championships 4.0 men’s division. The group’s win assured the home city an Adult 40 and Over State League Championship plaque.

“The results are better when you’re staying home,” said Pieters, the team’s captain. “Awesome. Just awesome.”

The Aiken men swept a team from the Columbia Tennis League, 5-0, in the finals. Both teams, though, have the opportunity to advance to the 2014 USTA Adult 40 and Over Southern Sectional Championships later this year because the Columbia team received a wild card from USTA Southern.

The sectional championships for the winning teams in the 3.0 and 4.0 divisions are scheduled for August 22-24 in Mobile, Alabama.

The USTA Southern Sectional Championships for the Adult 40 and Over 3.5 and 4.5 winning South Carolina teams will be held the same weekend in Asheville, North Carolina.

In all, eight USTA SC State League Championships were won in Aiken on Monday, the final day of the three-day USTA SC Adult 40 and Over State League Championships.

Teams from all over South Carolina finished as champions and finalists, including groups from Greenville, Columbia and Charleston.

The championships were hosted in Aiken by seven different clubs and parks teaming together to host matches for the 86 teams and more than 900 players.

Those adults, in addition to playing tennis, also filled Aiken’s hotels and busied the city’s restaurants, jolting the area’s economy.

The Aiken area will receive another economic boost this weekend when the USTA SC returns. The Adult 18 and Over State League Championships, levels 4.0 to 5.0, will be held Saturday through Monday.
