Host Cities for Future State League Championships Announced

July 1, 2014 01:42 PM

COLUMBIA, S.C. – USTA South Carolina and five tennis facilities across the state have agreed to partner together through 2016 to continue bringing championship tennis to thousands of adult tennis players.

At its meeting last month, the USTA SC Board of Directors finalized three-year contracts with the host facilities of the USTA SC’s nine state league championships.

“We are extremely fortunate to have the commitments for our league championships set for the next three years,” said Cam Littlejohn, USTA SC Board President. “The host cities and facilities are all top class and will provide excellent tennis courts and amenities for our players as they vie for state championships.”

Teams from all over South Carolina annually compete at USTA SC state league championships. The teams make it to “state” by playing well in their local USTA leagues.

For the host cities, a USTA SC championship weekend almost guarantees an economic boost. Hundreds of players compete in each championship, and family members and friends often accompany the players as well. The players enjoy the tennis, and they often turn the trips into mini vacations and explore the host city’s restaurants and shops.

Below are the host cities for the USTA SC state league championships through 2016.

  • Host facility hosts all finals matches. Other clubs and facilities, though, often host matches during state league championships.
  • Mixed doubles features a male and a female playing on the same doubles team.
  • Combo is single-gender doubles. The rating of a combo team combines the ratings of both players. For example, if one player has a 3.5 rating and another has a 4.0, the combo team would compete at the 7.5 level.
  • The National Tennis Rating Program rates players on a 1 to 7 scale, with “1” ratings given to people new to tennis and “7” ratings reserved for world-class players who compete in international tournaments.)
