USTA South Carolina teams represented the state and the USTA well at a Southern championship held earlier this month.

Five S.C. teams won championships and five more were finalists during the 2013 USTA League 55 & Over/65 & Over Southern Sectional Championships. The sun-challenged event was played Dec. 6-8 in Columbus, Ga.

Rain delayed play on Friday and Saturday and wiped out competition on Sunday. Showers deluged play so much that 11 of the 14 championships had to be decided by drawing on Sunday, as prescribed by tournament procedures. Competition decided only three of the championships: Men’s 55s 3.0, Men’s 55s 9.0 combined and Women’s 65s 3.0.

The South Carolina showing included a finalist run by the “Attackers,” Jim Mayer’s 65 and Over 3.5 team from the Mid-Carolina Tennis Association. The team advanced to the event by winning their local league championship and the 65 and Over 3.5 division of the USTA SC Adult 55, 65 and 75 and Over State Championships last fall.

USTA League tennis combines competition and camaraderie, helping almost 50,000 people in South Carolina alone play tennis and have fun. Click here to learn more about joining a league near you.
