Mixed Doubles 55 & Over and 65 & Over State Championships

October 13, 2013 06:44 PM

AIKEN, S.C. – Six tennis teams from around the state won championships Saturday during the USTA South Carolina Mixed Doubles 55 and Over and 65 and Over State Championships.

Players competed in the 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 divisions in the 55 and Over championships. The 65 and Over championships had two divisions, 7.0 and 8.0.

A rating for a mixed doubles team combines the league ratings of both players. For example, if one player has a 3.0 rating and another has a 4.0, the mixed doubles team would compete at the 7.0 level.

Players at the mixed doubles state championships ranged from 2.5 to 5.0.

Some of them will have a chance to win a bigger title as well. Champions from each 55 and Over division will be invited to the USTA Southern Invitational 55 and Over Mixed Doubles Championships, scheduled for Oct. 25-27 in Little Rock, Ark., and North Little Rock, Ark.

The event later this month had the 55 and Over 6.0 champions from the Lowcountry Tennis Association saying one word as they smiled for a photo: “Arkansas.”

Players also were pleased with the clay courts, the sunny weather and the competition.

“We get to play a lot of different people,” said Loyce Snyder of the Mid-Carolina Tennis Association. “It’s a good competition.”

Patti McVey, the state coordinator of the championships, complimented the job the City of Aiken and Mark Calvert, the city’s tennis supervisor, did maintaining the courts, including sweeping them in between matches.

The championships, held in Aiken on Friday through Sunday, featured the largest field yet for the tournament. More than 450 players from 12 tennis associations in South Carolina competed in the event.

The tournament has almost doubled since 2009 when 22 teams participated.

Leagues were established to provide adult recreational tennis players with the opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels. Players participate on teams in a league format, which is administered by USTA South Carolina.

USTA Leagues are the largest recreational tennis program in the world. Players compete on teams divided by age and skill level, with new age divisions for players aged 40 and over and players aged 55 and over debuting earlier this year.
