Nearly 2,400 Expected for USTA SC Championship on Hilton Head Island

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Beaufort County economy regularly benefits from tennis tournaments drawing visitors to the area. This weekend’s USTA South Carolina state league championship will be no exception.

On Thursday through Monday, some 2,350 USTA league players will be playing tennis on and around Hilton Head Island for the USTA South Carolina Combo Doubles State League Championships. And most of those league players will have traveled from out of town to participate in the USTA event.

Teams advance to state championships by playing well in their local leagues.

Ve Bretzel’s team of Hilton Head Island is one of those teams. But her group, unlike most, will have short commutes later this week. “We do get to sleep in our own beds and that’s certainly a positive,” she said.

Bretzel said she participates in USTA league tennis because it’s a healthy and social activity. Bretzel, who leads a 55 and Over team called the “Volley Damas,” also likes the competition.

“Some of us were competitive in business,” she said, “and most of us are now retired so we’ve channeled our competitive nature into the game of tennis.”

The championships, which will feature players 18 to 65 and older, will be played at 10 Beaufort County facilities, with Palmetto Dunes serving as the championships’ official host site.

In total, 28 state league championships will be won Friday through Monday. State champions will have the opportunity to advance to a USTA Southern championship that is scheduled for March 2015.

Matches start Thursday morning. Admission is free.
