The Palmetto State enjoyed tennis success recently in Huntsville, Alabama, for the 29th Annual Senior Cup Team Championships. More than 300 players, organized into teams representing their respective states in the USTA Southern Section, participated in the event, which was held June 4-7.

The competition was divided into men’s and women’s competition by age groups of 35, 45, 55, 65, and 75. The team matches consisted of two singles matches and one doubles match.

Many of the participants in the Senior Cup were one time collegiate all-Americans, NCAA champions, and professional players. All were vying for the chance to take the Mildred Southern Cup, the Gil Stacy Cup, and the men’s and women’s overall scoring title back to their home state.

Under the leadership of men’s captain Tom Foster and the women’s captain Cindy Babb, South Carolina claimed the women’s overall scoring title with 44 points and took the coveted Mildred Southern Cup, the competition's overall prize, back to the Palmetto State with 77 points.

Foster attributed the success of his group to their great conditioning and competitive nature, which has resulted in South Carolina taking titles in 2008 through 2011. While the men’s team for South Carolina is very talented, the women representing the team are among the best in the entire Southern Section and spend months prior to the tournament preparing to give them an edge over their opponents, especially border state rival Georgia.

The Peach State would end up taking the Gil Stacy Cup and the men’s overall scoring title this past weekend.
