Senior Cup
The top adult players from the nine states in the Southern Section met May 31-June 3 for the 2012 Southern Senior Cup in Huntsville, Ala. The weekend consisted of over 300 players in team competition for men and women’s 35s through 75s with two singles and one doubles match.
The state titleholder for the Mildred Southern Cup, which goes to the state with the most overall men’s and women’s championship points, went to South Carolina with 71 championship points. This was an extremely tight race with Georgia following closely behind with 67 points. North Carolina and Tennessee both finished at 40 points to tie for third place.
The state victor for the Gil Stacey Memorial Cup, which goes to the state with the most individual wins, was awarded to Georgia with 56 points. In another tight race, South Carolina followed closely behind with 53 points. Alabama finished third with 45 points, while Tennessee took fourth with 41 points.
The state winner for the Women’s Overall Championship went to South Carolinawith 40 championship points. There was a tie for second place between Georgia and North Carolina with 26 points each, followed by Louisiana in fourth place with 22 points.
The state winner for the Men’s Overall Championship goes to Georgia with 41 championship
points. South Carolina finished second behind them with 31 points. Tennessee and Louisiana rounded out the third and fourth positions with 26 and 16 points.
Congratulations to all of our award winning teams. This was by far the closest race for all of our championships! All of the states in the Senior Cup 2012 should be proud. This just reinforces that the Southern Senior Cup continues to be the crown jewel of adult competition in the South.
The players included former collegiate All-Americans, NCAA champions and professional players.
