Seven new USTA SC league state champs from the 65 & Over and 75 & Over League State Championships

Two Hilton Head Island teams and five other groups from across the state won USTA South Carolina 65 & Over and 75 & Over League State Championships earlier this month on Hilton Head Island.

And the 65 & Over teams can keep playing USTA championships this year. By winning the state championship, the teams can now represent South Carolina at the USTA League 65 & Over Southern Sectional Championships on Dec. 4-6 in Dothan, Alabama, where teams from nine states could compete for regional bragging rights.

The USTA South Carolina championships featured the top 45 teams from across the state. About 400 players overall competed in the championships, which were held at four area facilities, including the Port Royal Plantation, Sea Pines Country Club, Centre Court at Palmetto Dunes and the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center, the official host site of the championships.

The teams, which represent various clubs, parks, recreational departments and organizations, made it to Hilton Head Island because of strong earlier play.

At the championships, however, finalists were not determined in three divisions because of rain on the final day.

Established in 1980, the USTA League program has grown from 13,000 participants competing regionally to more than 865,000 participants playing across the country, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league.

USTA League was established to provide adult recreational tennis players throughout the country with the opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels. Players participate on teams in a league format, which is administered by the USTA. The league groups players by using six National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) levels, ranging from 2.5 (entry) to 5.0 (advanced).

USTA League is open to any USTA member 18 years of age or older.
