This year’s event, which starts Saturday and finishes Monday, has drawn the top 66 teams from across the state, including teams from Charleston, Greenville and Columbia. The players will compete in dozens of tennis matches while they’re in Charleston. They’ll also explore the area, eat at local restaurants and stay in neighboring hotels.

The teams, which represent various clubs, parks, recreational departments and organizations, made it this far because they finished at the top of their local leagues. In all, 12 league state championships in two age divisions – 18 & Over and 40 & Over – will be won.

The championships will be played at three area facilities, including the Charleston Tennis Center, the Maybank Tennis Center and St. Andrew’s Parks and Playground.

Established in 1980, the USTA League program has grown from 13,000 participants competing regionally to more than 865,000 participants playing across the country, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league.
