Dr. Sophie Woorons-Johnston competed in the Women 35s National Championship held in Salinas, California this past week. After defeating former Stanford All-American Marlo Carruth in the semi-finals, Woorons-Johnston beat Amy Alcini, ranked #1 in the US in women’s 40s, in the finals by the score of 6-0 6-1.
Woorons-Johnston said she played a perfect match. "Alcini is a serve and volleyer with a powerful backhand. I played a solid match, stayed focused the whole match, was aggressive and came to the net quite a bit. I knew that against a player this caliber, there is no room for error."
The next step for Woorons-Johnston is to represent TEAM USA in the World Championships for Women 35s and 40s held in Istanbul Turkey, next March! Now owner of the Brookstone Meadows Tennis Club in Anderson, South Carolina, Woorons-Johnston continues to excel in the world of tennis. Just this past week, two of the Brookstone Tennis teams won the Combo State Championships held in Charleston, SC. Woorons-Johnston’s next event is the National Team championships held in San Antonio Texas in November.
