Byrnes High School Tennis Camp

Byrnes High School in Duncan, SC, held its second annual tennis camp the second week of June.  The camp was co-sponsored by the Spartanburg Parks Commission and the Spartanburg Area Tennis Association.  The camp ran Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 11:30.  There were 32 campers, up from 25 last year.  The camp was run by 2011 Region 2-4A Coach of the Year Tom Barber and Coach Willie Dawkins, a longtime USTA member and tennis instructor.  Other counselors included Byrnes Girls Tennis Coach Christina Paxton, Newberry College tennis player Sierra Hoover (a Byrnes graduate), recent Byrnes graduates Saige Allison and Celena Snoddy, and several current members of the Byrnes tennis team.

Dennis Hodges of the Spartanburg Parks Commission administered and promoted the camp.  Local USTA-affiliated personnel involved in the camp included Kelly Hesketh (USTA Southern), who led a QuickStart tennis training session for the camp counselors; Todd Seagle (Spartanburg Jr. Team Tennis), who provided materials promoting USTA youth programs; and Sam Hicks (SATA), who designed and printed the t-shirts as well as organized USTA’s support of the camp.
Comments from parents and campers were overwhelmingly positive, and the organizers are considering holding two tennis camps next summer to meet demand.  This camp is proof that community cooperation, combined with a great sport, can achieve excellent results!
