Diane Fishburne Selected to Prestigious United States Bueno Cup Team

Fishburne, Diane 1 (3)The United States Tennis Association (USTA) recently selected Diane Fishburne of Charleston, SC, to be a member of the U. S. Maria Esther Bueno Cup Team for women 50 and over.  Fishburne will represent the United States at the 31st ITF Seniors World Team Championships on hard (Plexipave) courts in Ashburton, New Zealand, February 21-26, 2011.  Fishburne is one of a four-woman team selected by the USTA from the very top American players in her age division.  Her teammates include Kathy Vick, Lubbock, Texas, Susan Wright of Grand Junction, CO, and JoAnne Russell, Calabasas, CA.  The International Tennis Federation (ITF) sponsors this event annually and all member nations are eligible to field teams.  The U. S. team won the event in 2010.

Ms. Fishburne received a BA in Business from the College of Charleston where she played tennis for the Cougars achieving All-American status.  Fishburne, a USPTA and PTR certified tennis professional, teaches tennis at Charleston Country Club where her students not only develop their strokes but a life- long love of the game.  Since beginning her competition at the senior level, she has won more than twenty national singles and doubles titles and six mother/son national doubles titles; four ITF world singles titles; and two ITF world doubles titles.  Fishburne and her son, Matthew, finished 2010 as the top ranked mother/son team in the country.  The Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) awarded Fishburne the Female Player of the Year in 2008 and the Female Player of the Decade at the PTR Symposium in February of 2010.  Ms Fishburne is the current 2010 ITF women’s 50’s world singles champion.

Despite all of the awards and titles that Ms. Fishburne has received throughout her career, perhaps her greatest sense of accomplishment comes from the volunteer work she performs through sports.  She participates in fundraising events in the low country for Rally for the Cure and breast cancer programs and she is a volunteer organizer and instructor for inner city tennis programs in the Charleston area.  Fishburne is also an active volunteer for Special Olympics in the cities of Charleston and Walterboro as well as throughout South Carolina.
