First Session with USTA SC Competition Training Center a Success

The USTA SC Competition Training Center (CTC) held its first session today at the Lexington Area Tennis Complex. There were 26 of the top young juniors in the State that participated in the day long clinic. There was some great instruction from some of the top pros in South Carolina, Carlos Lozano from the Topspin Racket Club, Cornelius Jordan and Carl Hocker from the Country Club of Spartanburg, and USTA Southern Player Development’s Mark Smith from the Pebble Creek Country Club.

DSC_0042 The focus on the four part CTC this year is on shot selection and point construction. Cornelius Jordan did an excellent on-court presentation on the basics of shot selection. The players were split up into 4 groups and did some feeding and live-ball drills on the shots that were shown in the presentation. The players then participated in both singles and doubles match-play with on-court coaching. This is one of the most valuable assets of the CTC program. In most cases in junior tournament play there is no on-court coaching allowed, however at our CTC’s players are able to get coaching from the top professionals in between their points. This was a great teaching tool today with our shot selection theme. It also allows the coaches to help the players focus on the mental aspects of the game.

All of the players did very well today, despite the court temperatures reaching over 100*. Congratulations to Sean Nyugen who was the winner of the "One-point" tournament at the end of today’s session. A special thanks to Jessica Amick from the USTA SC office for helping facilitate today’s event and running the check-in desk. Our next session will be at the Topspin Racket Club (Lexington) on Sunday September 11, 2011.
