Southern Closed Championships

The Southern Closed Championships started this past weekend and will continue through the next couple days. The Southern Closed is a tournament that serves as a qualifier into Nationals. Each state sends a group of players to the tournament to represent their respective state. This year South Carolina had over 150 players go to Southerns.

Each age division is being held in a separate location. The Southerns 10’s East are in Cayce, SC, the Southerns 12’s are in Cary, NC, the Southerns 14’s are in Macon, GA, the Southerns 16’s are in Rome, GA, and lastly, the Southerns 18’s are in Mobile, AL. Also, every location has a coach from South Carolina to guide the players during the tournament. These coaches are: Mark Smith, Cornelius Jordan, Jerry Albrikes, Carlos Lozano, and Carlos Cobos.

One player in particular to follow is Adam Steryous, the two-seed in the Boys 18’s Southern Closed. Steryous is from Taylors, SC and won the Palmetto Championships this year in Belton. Other notable players to watch for include Davis Phillips (Boys 10’s), Phillip Jordan (Boys 12’s), Spencer Brown (Boys 14’s), Chambers Easterling (Boys 14’s), Robert Loeb (Boys 16’s), Sophie Young (Girls 10’s), Gianna Pielet (Girls 12’s), Maggie Cubitt (Girls 12’s), Mary McNeal (Girls 16’s), Makenna Jones (Girls 16’s), and Rachel McNeely (Girls 18’s).

Boys & Girls 10 Southern Closed-EAST- Tournament ID # - 704102513

The Boys and Girls 10’s Southern Closed Championships were held this past weekend in Cayce, South Carolina. Many players from South Carolina competed at Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center and were coached by Mark Smith. William Coulter, from Sumter, and Mary Cage Carter, from Greenville, won the South Singles Bracket of the compass draw. Also, Madeline Pollitzer and Emily Ruckno won the South Doubles Bracket. Lastly, Harrison Luba of Hilton Head Island won the Sportsmanship award for the Boys 10’s. Congratulations to all the players that represented South Carolina at the Southerns Closed Championship! Boys and Girls 12 and Under Southern Junior Closed- Tournament ID # -703929013

Cary, North Carolina hosted the Boys and Girls 12’s Southern Closed Championships this past weekend. Led by Coach Cornelius Jordan, many players traveled from South Carolina to compete in the tournament. Phillip Jordan made it to the finals of the main draw and lost, 7-6,6-0; Anuraag Govindarajan won the North Bracket of the compass draw; and Gianna Pielet made it to the Semi’s of the main draw. Boys and Girls 14 and Under Southern Junior Closed- Tournament ID #- 703410813

The Boys and Girls 14's Southern Closed Championships were held this past week in Macon, Georgia. Coached by Jerry Albrikes, top players from South Carolina traveled to compete in the tournament. In the boys draw of 160 players, three quarterfinalists were from South Carolina. Spencer Brown lost in the semifinals and will play for 3/4 position Friday morning. Boys and Girls 16 and Under Southern Junior Closed- Tournament ID #-703472013

This past week Rome, Georgia hosted the Boys and Girls 16's Southern Closed Championships. Coached by Carlos Lozano, top players from South Carolina traveled down to compete in the tournament. Makenna Jones, from Greenville, lost in the semifinals and will be playing for third and fouth on friday. Robert Loeb and doubles partner Alex Phillips placed second in doubles. Boys and Girls 18 and Under Southern Junior Closed- Tournament ID #-700005813 

This past week top 18's South Carolina players traveled to Mobile, Alabama to compete in the Girls and Boys 18s Southern Closed Championship. Among the players participating, Adam Steryous will play in the finals of the consolation bracket while Olivia Lucas and Rachel McNeely made it to the round of 16 in the doubles draw.
