Summerville South Carolina Represented at SC Junior Team Tennis State Championships

As the sun sets over the Dr. Eddie Floyd Tennis Center in Florence, SC, players are leaving the courts and seeking the cool relief of the air-conditioned tennis club. The first day of the 2017 South Carolina Junior Team Tennis (JTT) State Championships is winding down and the Players’ Party is gearing up with Wii and Xbox One games, ping-pong matches and delicious appetizers.

34 teams advanced to this weekend’s State Championships through local play in one of the 13 Junior Team Tennis leagues across South Carolina. One area is especially excited to be represented here. Summerville has three teams; the Summerville Spinners (10 and Under Intermediate), the ACEketeers (12 and Under Intermediate) and the Summerville Seahawks (18 and Under Advanced).

For the ACEketeers, all but one of their players is participating in Junior Team Tennis for the first time this year. Susie Wimberly, the team manager, closely monitored the stats from the beginning to the end of the season.  When they found out they would be coming to the JTT State Championships, they began practicing every day for a week and a half. The team came up with a chant, made t-shirts and even decorated their car to participate in the Spirit Contest.

“We’re like the little engine that could,” commented Wimberly. “We’re small teams that are so excited to be here.” She continued, “We stressed the importance of just being here, and of meeting other kids from around the state. But of course, we still want to win!”

Junior Team Tennis brings together boys and girls, ages 6 to 18, to play singles, doubles and mixed doubles against other coed teams. JTT is a competitive, level-based environment that promotes individual growth, social growth and life skills.

The weekend will continue tomorrow with the tennis extravaganza, which has become a JTT Championships favorite. There will be a hit-and-get competition, water slides, a video game truck and fun for the whole family. The Team Spirit/Social Media Competition is also back this year!
