Player Spotlight: Wood Benton

Wood trophyWood Benton of Spartanburg, SC is one of the top junior players in the state of South Carolina.  Wood is currently ranked no. 1 in the South Carolina Boys' 14 Division.  After winning the Southern Closed Championships, Wood will be competing on the prestigious Nike Junior Tour with some of the nation's top junior players.
 
What is the most memorable experience you’ve had playing tennis?
The most memorable experience I’ve had is winning the Southern Closed this year.
 
Who is your favorite professional tennis player? Why?
Gael Monfils because he has fun while he’s playing and gets the crowd into the match.

What do you feel is the strongest part of your game?
I think the strongest part of my game is my footwork, and the ability I have to get so many balls back.

What do you do to prepare for a match?

I sleep to the last minute, then I have to go warm up, which I do not like to do.

What do you see yourself doing in ten years?
I picture myself living on the beach and teaching tennis at a club.

What has been your favorite South Carolina tournament to play in? Why?
Pepsi because Florence is where I am from and where I learned to play the game.

Who has helped you the most with your tennis game?
Cornelius Jordan and Larry Rizzo

What are you most looking forward to regarding the Nike Junior Tour?

I am looking forward to playing against the best kids there are in the United States

If you could take one aspect of another player’s game and apply it to your game, what would you take?

I would take Roddick’s serve and apply it to my game.

What type of racquet do you play with?
I play with the Babolat Pure Drive.

What would you say is your biggest achievement, so far, in the game of tennis?

I think my biggest achievement is winning Southerns and making it to Nike Junior Tour.
