PTR Junior Development Workshop

DSC0502510 and Under Tennis is everywhere! In addition to the information and resource blitz on pros and facilities there are ads, articles and promotion in mainstream media too. Following the ITF rule change the USTA also changed the rules for 10 and Under Tennis and "its game on" for the industry and most importantly the success and enjoyment kids will experience.

So you’ve got the QuickStart Practice Plans, you’ve watched a video or two, right? Are you really ready for a summer full of youth programs? No doubt we have great pros in South Carolina and many of the USTA print resources and workshops such as a QuickStart Recreational Workshop, QuickStart High Performance Workshop and Recreational Coach Workshop all offer excellent content to supplement a pro’s knowledge in this area. Where do you go if you crave more and want to hone your skills to a higher level, even get a certification?

The Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) diligently developed a Junior Development Certification. Anne Pankhurst consulted for the PTR from her extensive international background of coaching and education. The Junior Development Workshop emphasizes the importance of creating a coaching environment in which junior players can learn to play quickly.

Elements of the PTR Junior Development Certification Workshop

DSC05022• Communication and organization skills for the coach

• Structure and content of tennis lessons

• Skills and games for juniors
• Serve, rally and score as quickly as possible

• Appropriate competition for different ages

• Information for working positively with parents

PTR hosted a Junior Development Workshop last week on Kiawah Island. About ten pros participated including veterans Charly Rasheed, Director of Tennis at Wild Dunes and Brian Parkkonen, Director of Tennis at the Florence Tennis Complex.

Rasheed feels that these types of workshops are a can’t-miss-opportunity for any tennis pro, saying, "The PTR Junior Development workshop administered by Anne Pankhurst is a phenomenal tennis experience.   This workshop is on point as it deconstructs the changing trends of 10 and Under Tennis.  I recommend this certification opportunity to every tennis pro that has a junior program.  Anne answers the who, what, where, when, and most importantly why concerning the new construct of 10 and Under Tennis."

Parkkonen added, "This class is a necessity for any DSC05019
teaching professional that is running or planning on running a 10 and Under program. Many professionals have an idea of how the whole program works, however they may not know step by step what the progressions with proper racquet, court, and ball size should be. This class prepares you by giving you the tools and knowledge to run a top notch 10 and Under program. Each professional will walk away with the ability to take a 5 yr old beginner player and see them through the whole progression up to a top performance player."
