SC Players Win in USTA/ITF SC Junior Championships

The Palmetto State was well represented in the USTA/ITF South Carolina Junior Championships this year. The tournament, hosted by Lexington County Tennis Complex and Tournament Director Jorge Andrew, was comprised of a number of talented players from around the world.  A great effort was made by all, but a few SC native junior players stood out for their outstanding play.

webHayleyCarterHayley Carter of Columbia won the Girls 18s Singles Division, as she defeated Josie Kuhlman from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida 6-4 6-3. Carter also teamed with Kuhlman to take home the Girls 18s Doubles title against Ali Black and Nicole Frenkel 6-1 6-0.

Carter, who trains at Smith Stearns Tennis Academy on Hilton Head Island, has had some great accomplishments this year. Some include reaching the quarterfinals of the USTA Girls Junior Nationals in San Diego, California and being awarded a wild card berth for the U.S. Open Junior tournament. Carter also reached the semifinals at the USTA Pro Circuit tournament in Sumter this summer, beating a former No. 1-ranked junior and a former University of Florida player.

Untitled-6Chip Cox of Myrtle Beach teamed with Connor Clements of Daniel Island to win the Boys 18s Doubles title against opponents Charles Boyce and Mackenzie McDonald 7-5 3-6 [10-5].

Cox is a sophomore on the University of South Carolina Men’s Tennis team and led the team with 10 dual-match singles wins, including three in SEC action in the 2010-2011 season.  He also posted a team-best nine doubles wins in dual matches.

Clements, a senior in the class of 2012, is a five-star recruit on tennisrecruiting.net. He trains with the Instinctive Tennis Academy at the Family Circle Tennis Center and is currently ranked number two in South Carolina. Clements was the lone SC player in the singles round of 16 for the boys in the USTA/ITF South Carolina Junior Championships this year.
