Super Senior Championship Results

Super Senior States -- The Numbers and Excitement Grow at Wild Dunes

ISLE OF PALMS SC -- The South Carolina Super Senior State Championships went to a new six-day format to accommodate ever-increasing player numbers and rolled through the Nov. 1-6 schedule with a record 122 teams at Wild Dunes Resort and satellite sites. The competition produced 16 level champions in 60s, 70s and 75s aiming for their next success in Southern Sectionals Dec. 2-4 on Hilton Head Island.

Fittingly, it was the Southerns' host site that took the king crab's share of championships and finalists. Hilton Head Island won five championships and had four finalists, while its 'cross-the-bridge neighbor Coastal Carolina took three championships and four second places. Grand Strand also captured three titles and had one team finalist.   Savannah Lakes (GATA) winning for the first time ever in a tightly played 60s Women 3.5s match.
Eight 75s teams led off the week with Tuesday/Wednesday play. The 70s battled Wednesday-Friday and the 60s went Friday through Sunday finals. The 75s Men's 3.0s have two teams entered that will play off Nov. 17-18. State Super Senior Coordinator Bonnie Sue Duncan and her bevy of co-workers encountered only one weather burp over the six days. Thursday overnight downpours delayed start of that day’s matches until midmorning and midday and necessitated no-ad scoring, but all scheduled matches were finished by day's end. That gave everyone extra time to recover from the big players' party the night before in the Sweetgrass Pavilion.
When teams got back on court with regular scoring Saturday, the bright sun and exceptionally close competition returned. Nothing was closer than in the 60s Women's 3.5s in which nine of the 16 teams finished in-group round robins with 2-1 records. Two of the groups were so close that fewest games lost determined which teams advanced -- three games in one group and four in the other.
In addition to the champions, eight SC teams have received wildcards to Southerns, with the possibility of more later.
Coordinator Duncan cited the state's impressive growth in Super Seniors. "Our total participation in South Carolina for 2010 was 2,665 players and 262 teams. This year we have 3,059 players and 308 teams. In 2010, we had 116 teams participating at the State Championship. This year we had 122."
In the three captains' meetings, Duncan took a look at the future with continued player and team growth heading into the nationwide USTA League age-restructuring that will go into effect in 2013. The outlook is for senior age divisions in 55s instead of 60s and 65s instead of 70s ... "and, of course, 75s," she said, emphasizing "we certainly won't be abandoning our 75s."
