Southern Members Earn Wheelchair Tennis Certificates

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC – Several Southern members participated in the PTR Instructing Wheelchair Tennis Workshop on Sunday, September 14, at Chaplin Park Tennis Center on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Harlon Matthews, of McDonough, GA conducted the workshop.  Attendees Nick Burnham, Larry Keeter and Tiago Ruffoni, all from Charlotte, NC, joined South Carolinians Tedi Doncheva, Kim Ozmon and Taylor Wingate of Rock Hill, and Peggy and Shep Funderburk of Saint George, to earn their certificates to teach tennis to players in wheelchairs.

The workshop participants actually used wheelchairs in order to understand the special skills required to maneuver the wheelchair and to hit from a modified elevation.  Mobility, stroke production and general wheelchair basics were covered in the curriculum.  Attendees also learned the components of chair construction, as well as that the degree of disability varies with each wheelchair athlete.

PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 15,000 members in 125 countries.  It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization.  PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and servicing tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
